Microsoft’s Security Advisiory 2028859 : Switch off Aero in Windows 7 64 bit and Revert to basic themes

Microsoft Security IssuesMicrosoft is investigating a new public report of a vulnerability in the Canonical Display Driver (cdd.dll). Although it is possible that the vulnerability could allow code execution, successful code execution is unlikely due to memory randomization. In most scenarios, it is much more likely that an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could cause the affected system to stop responding and automatically restart.

Although no attacks have been reported yet but Microsoft has not yet come up with an effective solution to this loop hole.Microsoft currently suggests to switch of aero based themes and revert to basic themes.

The following are the affected Operating Systems : -

  • Windows 7 for x64-based Systems
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64-based Systems
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 for Itanium-based Systems

The detailed advisory can be read here.

Windows XP SP2 to die on July 13 2010

Windows XP SP2Microsoft has confirmed the date ,when it will be slashing the support of its popular Windows XP Service Pack 2 , i.e it wont provide any further updates to the OS’s Service Pack version 2 .

“I want to remind you that support for Windows XP SP2 ends July 13, 2010. If you or your customers stay on Windows XP we will still provide updates for Windows XP SP3. Let’s check out our lifecycle support page to understand how long Microsoft will support SP3, and Windows XP as a whole,” Microsoft’s Rob Waggoner noted.

Although this does not means the end of XP, one of the most popular OS by Microsoft. Microsoft will continue to provide support for XP SP3  till 2014.Which means XP will still remain alive till 2014.The SP2 users have 2 good choices – either to update to SP3 or better upgrade to Windows 7. Although Vista is again a option but Windows 7 is recommended.

Microsoft has also denied the possibility of SP4 that is another service pack of XP.
