Although Gmail has been a free webmail from starting still they have provided all the features of paid webmails to free users too. The biggest was security and use of HTTPS .Although Gmail had been using HTTPS until the login but after login users were redirected to the HTTP servers at http://mail.google.com .For more security they had to manually go to https://mail.google.com
Google had till now kept this to be manually done because https are slow and take time by the browser to decrypt.Now you can choose to permanantly to be on http or https servers by going to your settings page at http://mail.google.com/mail/#settings

Google is rolling this features slowly to Gmail and Google App users.Some products that connect to Gmail, like Google Toolbar, are not yet compatible with https.

i think google is really busy making frequent updates like now this after free storage
well i don’t know if my emails are so secret that someone would try to steal them and i wouldn’t want that to happen so i’d use https. it is not important to me… nice find though.
yeah noticed it yesterday and its good but some internet connections dont support https, so force https secure connection can put you in trouble prolly cafe’s dont support secure connections sometimes.
@moin u got a good point
anywayz u can still use that http one by going to http://mail.google.com and after login also replace https by http
