Google launches “App Engine”

Google Today launches its awaited service App Engine.
Google App Engine lets you run your web applications on Google’s infrastructure. App Engine applications are easy to build, easy to maintain, and easy to scale as your traffic and data storage needs grow. With App Engine, there are no servers to maintain: You just upload your application, and it’s ready to serve your users.

According to the official App Engine blog ,

Google App Engine gives you access to the same building blocks that Google uses for its own applications, making it easier to build an application that runs reliably, even under heavy load and with large amounts of data.

The current release is a preview only release which has only free acounts.Google Hopes to add purchasable resources in the near future.

App Engines Currently has the following features:

  • dynamic web serving, with full support for common web technologies
  • persistent storage with queries, sorting and transactions
  • automatic scaling and load balancing
  • APIs for authenticating users and sending email using Google Accounts
  • a fully featured local development environment that simulates Google App Engine on your computer

There are certain limitations too that include :-

  • This service is available only for the first 10,000 developers that first sign up.
  • This storage is limited to 500 MB.
  • A developer can submit only upto 3 Apps.
  • The page views is limited to 5 million page views per month(I think this is enough for most small and medium developers :P)
